I'm a food photographer but I actually also prefer B! I think photos need their own space and it bothers me when there's words directly blocking the image. Also, B style makes better coffe table books!

I absolutely adore the British covers. The thing about food photography that a lot of people overlook is how fast it looks dated. Even cookbooks from five years ago look out of touch if they’re just photography based, where as bold illustration choices typically have more staying power and fall into a “nostalgic” vibe faster than photographs.

So true. Also, when they put a picture of the author/chef on the cover—that will date it quickly, too!

US Flavor is an outlier in that group for sure. It makes you wonder how that decision was made in light of the others.

Surprisingly, I don’t think THAT much about cook book covers. But I should!

I generally agree with your assessment, but my favorite of the whole bunch is the American version of Flavor. I think the closeup photo is great and the type is more daring than any of the other options.
